Tunis

Tunis, the vibrant capital of Tunisia, is one of the Arab world’s most captivating and underrated cities — a place where ancient Phoenician roots, Roman grandeur, Ottoman elegance, and French colonial charm layer seamlessly over one another to create a destination unlike any other in the Mediterranean. Sitting at the crossroads of Africa and Europe, Tunis is a city of contrasts: narrow, whitewashed medina alleys lined with artisan workshops give way to grand European-style boulevards and buzzing modern cafés. The city is home to the UNESCO-listed Medina of Tunis — one of the finest preserved Arab medinas in the world — as well as the extraordinary ruins of ancient Carthage just minutes from the city center. With a Mediterranean coastline, world-class archaeological sites, an emerging arts and food scene, and some of the warmest hospitality in North Africa, Tunis rewards every curious traveler who ventures beyond the obvious.

Tunisia is a moderate Muslim country with a relaxed attitude toward dress in most urban and tourist areas. In the medina and mosques, modest clothing is respectful and recommended — covering shoulders and knees. At beach resorts and coastal areas, regular holiday attire is perfectly acceptable. We provide a full cultural briefing to all travelers.

The Tunisian Dinar (TND) is the local currency. Note that it is a controlled currency — you cannot import or export it, so exchange money on arrival at the airport or licensed exchange offices. Cards are accepted at hotels and larger restaurants, but cash is preferred in the medina souqs and local eateries. ATMs are widely available throughout Tunis.
