Amman

Amman, the White City, is one of the Arab world’s most dynamic, welcoming, and fascinatingly layered capitals — a city that has been continuously inhabited for over ten thousand years yet feels arrestingly modern, forward-looking, and alive. Sprawling across seven original hills — now expanded to over nineteen — Amman is a city of extraordinary contrasts: ancient Roman theatres and Byzantine mosaics sit blocks away from rooftop cocktail bars and Michelin-quality restaurants; the call to prayer floats over a skyline of gleaming towers; and the legendary Jordanian hospitality that has welcomed travelers and traders for millennia is as present today in a cup of cardamom coffee offered by a local shopkeeper as it ever was. Jordan sits at the geographical and cultural heart of the Middle East — bordered by Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, Palestine, and Israel — and Amman reflects this crossroads identity in everything from its food to its architecture to the extraordinary diversity of people who have always called it home. It is also the gateway to some of the most extraordinary destinations on earth: Petra, the rose-red city carved into sandstone cliffs; Wadi Rum, the vast desert wilderness of The Martian and Lawrence of Arabia; the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth; and the crusader castles and Byzantine mosaics of the King’s Highway. For Arab travelers, Amman is home. For international visitors, it is the warmest possible introduction to the Arab world.
